Medical advice & assistance beyond the cabin is key for healthy crew and passengers

Winter is coming and with it the advent of seasonal flu. To help prevent the spread of the infection, MedAire will provide flu shots, flu prevention strategies, and travel health information to attendees at the 2019 NBAA Business Aviation Conference & Expo.

“No one wants to be sick – particularly flight crew that need to be on the top of their game,” said Dr Paulo Alves, Medical Director at MedAire. “Getting the flu vaccine is one thing people can do to protect themselves.”

The MedAire medical team will be available to talk about ways to reduce exposure to flu and other contagious diseases; as well as answer travel health questions.

“Unfortunately, there are many other diseases in the world, and medical resources vary significantly from country to country and within the countries,” continued Dr Alves. “That’s why we at MedAire put such a strong emphasis on providing clients with pre-travel medical advice and travel health information. Our goal is to help them understand risks at upcoming destinations so they can prepare accordingly and reduce the likelihood of getting ill.”

MedAire provides medical and personal travel security advice and assistance to crew and passengers. Their integrated solution of pre-travel information, en-route emergency medical support, and assistance at destination helps organisations reduce risks to their people, aircraft, and operations.

Attendees at BACE can request a flu shot at the MedAire booth during the hours of 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 22 – 23. Booth visitors may also request a Seasonal Flu Pocket Guide while supplies last. MedAire is located in Central Hall — C11633.

PREVENT THE SPREAD OF SEASONAL FLU

To help prevent the spread of influenza, advise your crew to take the following steps:

  • Get a flu vaccination every year. The CDC (Centres for Disease Control) recommends vaccination by the end of October.
  • If they are ill, ask them to practice self-Isolation until they are symptom-free for 24 hours.
  • Minimise the number of crew directly exposed to an ill person on board if possible.
  • Wear gloves and an N95 mask when interacting with any ill person.
  • Wash hands with warm soapy water before and after caring for any ill person (hand sanitiser is an acceptable alternative).

Dispose of tissues, gloves, masks, etc. as bio-hazard waste.

Don’t let influenza slow down your operation this season. Prevention is the key to healthy crew, so paying close attention to personal hygiene, frequent hand washing and vaccinations are key to stopping the spread of influenza.
